Biography

Dr. Ashok Kumar is a highly distinguished biomedical researcher and the Founding Director of the Institute of Muscle Biology and Cachexia (IMBC) at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy. He holds the prestigious title of Else and Philip Hargrove Endowed Professor of Drug Discovery.

Prior to establishing the IMBC in 2025, Dr. Kumar served as the Chair of the Department of Pharmacological and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Houston from 2019 to 2023. Before joining UH in 2019, he built a renowned academic career as a Professor and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

Over his career, Dr. Kumar has published more than 120 peer-reviewed research articles in top-tier medical journals—such as Nature Communications, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and Journal of Cell Biology. He has mentored over 40 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and his laboratory maintains continuous funding through multiple R01 awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
